N. C. Wyeth

Author: Kate F. Jennings

So close to perfection...
This is what a book about N.C. Wyeth's work should look like. It contains crisp and colorful reproductions and they are shown in full detail. It's only a shame they don't show enough.. Wyeth produced over 2,000 illustrations in his lifetime.. it wouldn't hurt to show more. Great buy though.

Poke Greens For Breakfast?: True Stories of Rural Arkansas, Oklahoma Dust Bowl Days, & South Dakota Sheep Wagon Tales
Published in Paperback by iUniverse.com (August, 1999)
Author: Walta Sorrels Jennings
Average review score:

I couldn't put it down!
I enjoyed reading about life in the first half of the 20th century, told vividly and humorously. Walta tells about her childhood as if she were still a little girl experiencing it, but her style of writing changes as she "grows up." I split my sides laughing at the joke pulled on her step-dad at the Chivaree, but the Great Depression stories about sharing cold biscuits with a tramp and being bilked by an escaped convict are poignant and sensitive. She's a good "story-teller," with the ability to paint pictures with her words. She's the kind of author you'd like to get to know.

Santiago Calatrava: Complete Works
Published in Paperback by Gingko Press (January, 1999)
Authors: Sergio Polano, Jeffrey Jennings, Steve Piccolo, and Sergio Dolano
Average review score:

A good book, but oldfashioned!
For me this is a very good book of Calatrava's work, but there is a big problem. The quality is good, the photografs are good, the text is not too much but the works presented are only projects that where not built and there aren't recent projects. That's the only problem.

Special Edition Using Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
Published in Paperback by Que (06 October, 2000)
Author: Roger Jennings
Average review score:

A readable technical introduction to Windows 2000
This book seems to be targeted at Network Architects who are designing LANS or WANS, UNIX users who are interested in what Server 2000 has to offer and others who are interested in this area. As always with QUE books there is a list near the front of who they consider the potential audience to be. It is fairly advanced and does concentrate on the Server and networking side of Windows 2000. Windows 2000 does require planning before rolling out but for those who do especially in larger more complex networks there are some very nice management paybacks.

Personally I use operating systems but need to know what to recommend and why to clients who are putting in new systems.

For me this Que book was useful in that it gave me the major relevant differences between Windows NT 4.0 and Server 2000. The parts I found of most interest where the security polices which were quite well explained, and Active Directory for me the most important part of Windows 2000. It gathers up information that readers require to get through the Microsoft CSE exams in a page or so at the end of each chapter so for those of us who really are interested in the concepts rather than the keystrokes to pass the exam can simply skip them.

There is a detailed discussion about RAID, file encryption and compression which may change the way you set up the hard drives on a fast server. You should be aware though that the security included in Windows 2000 is not the ultimate level and there are a number of issues outside the scope of this book for those who have high security requirements. I was pleased to see a discussion of backup, one area that is often overlooked.

The book is designed to highlight the new features from Windows NT 4.0, it contains relevant web page links, and cautions where an action might lead to unexpected or unpredictable results. I found the tips from the author which describe shortcuts and alternative approaches useful especially as they seem to be based on experience.

In summary a useful book to get an overview of Windows 2000, other books are required to delve into each topic in depth.

The Terrible Teague Bunch
Published in Hardcover by W.W. Norton & Company (April, 1975)
Author: Gary. Jennings
Average review score:

Well worth the read.
Yes, it is the Gary Jennings of Aztec/ Journeyer/Raptor fame. As with all Jennings, it revolves around a journey. Strong characters, some humor, too short (which is not like Jennings at all). It is hard to believe that the publisher does not keep this in print (it is even harder to understand this with Spangle).

A Texas Ranger
Published in Paperback by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Trd) (March, 1997)
Authors: N. A. Jennings, Stephen L. Hardin, and J. Frank Dobie
Average review score:

A Texas Ranger
It should be of little wonder that A Texas Ranger, originally printed in 1899, has been through several reprints. This small book remains one of the most readable and compelling accounts of life on the rough and rugged Texas frontier among the famed Texas Rangers in the 1870's. With a foreword by the noted western writer J. Frank Dobie, and an introduction by current day historian Stephen L. Harding, author N.A. Jennings recounts with clarity and intensity his first-hand experiences as a young easterner who comes to Texas to find his fortune. What Jennings actually finds is adventure beyond description in a land that abounds in beauty and majesty while frought with danger and hardship. The author's depictions of real-life events along the Texas-Mexico border are told in first person and include his recollections of fights at Las Cuevas and run-ins with such outlaws as King Fisher, John Wesley Hardin, and Sam Bass. The reader, through the eyes of this talented writer, is offered a look into the action-packed old West. The book serves to accentuate the impact that the daring and hearty young Rangers had in ridding the frontier of Mexican raiders and the lawless riffraff that found its way to Texas in the mid-nineteenth century. While A Texas Ranger makes an interesting read, the book itself is not without controversy. Famed Texas historian Walter Prescott Webb characterized the book as one that "abounds in errors and misrepresentations." However, Jennings fully acknowledges that his book, written some twenty-five years after his experiences in Texas, is based largely upon his recollections of events at the time and is adequately footnoted throughout. From this reviewer's perspective, A Texas Ranger is an interesting and engaging story, one that most readers will have a difficult time in putting down.
